As part of the group CPH Volunteers, we had a chance to volunteer at the
World Half Marathon Championship on March 29th. The event is held in different countries every year, and this year happened to be in Copenhagen. It is an elite race, so about 300 professional runners from around the world compete in it every year. This year was the first time that local runners were able to participate, something which follows closely with the community in CPH. About 30,000 local runners started the race after the elite runners. They were hoping one of the elite runners would set a record because it is a very flat course, but unfortunately it didn't happen. Other than running out of food and water by the end (which was horrible and I felt so bad for the last thousand runners), it was a great event.
As volunteers, we got nifty red jackets and a "hearty" sandwich.
Unwrapping energy bars for after the race. I suggested using the empty boxes to unwrap more ... engineering!
The 'energy bar' team
Helle Thorning-Schmidt (the PM of Denmark) gave a nice introduction to the crowd
Large crowds lining up to start the race
Tons of clothing leftover by the runners, similar to the US, the Red Cross collected them afterwards
We handed out a bar that's called "Before Training Bar." So many made jokes about it, since we were, um, handing them out after training.
My friend and colleague Guangya after completing the race.
